How to Fast and Hear from God

  1. Get a bible scripture that coincides with your ask. For instance if you are asking for rent, search for a scripture talking about God providing financial resources for his people. If you are looking for a partner, search for scriptures that talk about marital settlement. Make sure you study that verse, or the entire storyline behind that bible verse and hold on to it. If possible, memorize that scripture. I am laying this much emphasis because doubt will come. The devil finds a way to tempt you into doubting or second guessing your prayers. There is a mind battle going on but the knowledge of the word of God will put the devil in his place. When the devil came to tempt Jesus, our lord said to him “IT IS WRITTEN.” (MATTHEW 4:3-4)

The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

  1. Prepare your mind to pray according to God’s will. “His will not yours”.(1John 5:14-15) I want you to understand that God does not answer selfish prayers. If you plan to ask for a selfish thing, you can stop reading now. You can close this tab. (James 4:3) However if you want to learn to pray according to God’s will then you can continue. Let me explain, it is the will of God that believers prosper. (Jeremiah 29:11) Therefore, anything that will propagate the kingdom of God is God’s will. (Matthew 6: 33) Finding yourself in alignment with your purpose for God’s kingdom will bring you to a place of abundance. For he is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we could ask or imagine. (Ephesians 3:20-21) One day I noticed that God answered a prayer I had wanted to pray. Unfortunately, I couldn't remember literally saying that prayer. In order to confirm, I went into my prayer journal and looked intensely and still did not find it. That was when I realized that God literally answered a prayer point that I had imagined… It was mind blowing for me. He answered it because it was for His purpose. (Matthew 6:10) It is important that we understand that God searches our heart and if you are praying for a car for selfish reasons, you will not get it. I am sorry to say it. Meditate upon the scriptures you have chosen before you start your fast. Meditate on it before you sleep. Let the scripture be the last thing you have on your mind before you sleep.

And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us. 1 John 5:14 King James Version (KJV)

  1. Decide your fasting terms and condition while putting into condition, your work, your family and all other parts of your life. For example, choose a convenient time to pray uninterruptedly daily for at least one hour. Also choose a time to study the bible for 30 minutes to 1 hour minimum uninterrupted daily. Choose a time during this period. 6am, 9am, 12pm, 3pm, 6pm, 9pm, 12am, 3am. Choose one time(given above) that you will pray for one hour at least without interruption. Yes God answers prayers every other time but this is a kingdom principle. If you know you will be at work by 3pm, don't choose to pray one hour at that time, you can just go 10 minutes in the bathroom while at work and pray one hour at midnight at home.

During the fast.

  1. Start your devotion every day. Meditate on the word you study and the prayer point every day. Do not skip. Consistency is key in God’s kingdom.(Galatians 6:9)

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

  1. Get a pen and a book beside you before you sleep off. Make sure to write down any dream you get during the fast and after the fasting, even if it doesn't make sense. The answer you seek may even come days after the fast. Dreams are one of the ways that God speaks to his people. In Genesis God revealed Joseph's destiny in a dream and in the new testament Joseph received a warning dream which made them escape disaster. The idea of writing dreams down or journaling your dreams helps us remember them. Your brain cannot remember everything. Dreams are often messages from God. I do not take my dreams for granted, especially dreams that come during a fasting and praying exercise. Once I wake up, I write my dream(s) down in my dream journal, because chances are if I move away from that position or room and interact with others in the house, I will forget it completely or forget some parts. One of the most popular ways God warns us, encourages us or reveals his plans for us is through dreams. (Joel 2: 28). When you receive a word from God through dream, vision or any other channel please write them down.

“And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions.

  1. Also be sensitive to the people you listen to too. The answer you may seek may come from someone, even without the person knowing.(Proverbs 4:20–23)

20. My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body. Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

  1. Remove and avoid all distractions during this fasting period(Matthew 6:22-24). For instance, stay away from things that affect or feed your mind through your 5 senses. Social media, ungodly environments, wicked congregations/counsel of ungodly friends or family, non- christian movies. In short, stay away from anything that doesn't build your faith. Proverbs (4:23)

23. Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

  1. Use platforms like YouTube specifically listen to sermons from men of God on the topic of praying and fasting everyday. Also listen to testimonies of people who fasted and received help from God. If you are praying a warfare prayer, watch videos that talk about warfare victory in Jesus. You can even pray some prayers on some youtube videos. I promise you, you will never be the same (Romans 10:17).

So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.

  1. When you pray, surrender to the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:26) and let him direct your prayers. Sometimes we pray amiss. Incorporate praying in the tongues(1 Corinthians 14:2). If you do not yet pray in tongues you can ask God for it (Matthew 5:6).

And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.

  1. Believe that you have it (Mark 11:24). God rewards those who diligently seek him (Hebrews 11:6). God does not forsake those who seek him(Psalm 94:14 ). Those who wait upon the lord shall renew their strength(Isa. 40:31).

Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
